The Gloucester Project

The Gloucester's Career under the Commonwealth Regime

Under the leadership of its first captain, Benjamin Blake, the brother of the famous General-at-Sea Robert Blake, the Gloucester sailed to the Caribbean in 1654 and supported the capture and colonisation of Jamaica. It then continued in active service for the remainder of the Cromwellian period by participating in skirmishes off the coast of Iberia and contributing to a campaign for control of the Swedish-Danish Sound.
